An interview with Peter Stapfer

Dean of Swiss Banking School

The International Wealth Management Executive MBA is a tailored academic program for high-potential executives in wealth management. The Swiss Banking School in Zurich, with its many years' experience in executive training in banking and finance, is responsible for the execution of the program.

Could you give us a brief overview of your MBA program?

The International Wealth Management Executive MBA is a tailored program for high-potential executives from the wealth management area. The program awards an MBA degree from the University of Geneva and an Executive MBA from one of the highest-rated universities in the U.S., Carnegie Mellon University. The Swiss Banking School (a privately owned foundation of UBS, Credit Suisse Group, Bank Vontobel, Bank Julius Baer and Lombard Odier Darier Hentsch) in Zurich, with its many years' experience in executive training in banking and finance, is responsible for the execution of the program. This wide support guarantees access to a large pool of leading academics, as well as access to senior practitioners in the field of wealth management.

The modular structure of the program allows participants to complete the course without having to renounce their organizational responsibilities. The interdisciplinary curriculum of the MBA program is geared entirely towards the requirements of the wealth management industry. A core group of topics focuses on the functional issues of wealth management ranging from finance to law, another group of topics addresses the interpersonal skills and a third group of topics deals with general management issues such as marketing, leadership, strategy and technology, adapted to the wealth management industry.

What makes your MBA unique from programs offered by other business schools?

The International Wealth Management Executive MBA program is one of the only Executive MBA programs that are offered worldwide and the sole EMBA with a thematic focus on wealth management/private banking. The program therefore attracts senior wealth managers from all parts of the world.

Could you describe the structure of your program?

The International Wealth Management Executive MBA requires 15 weeks of attendance that takes place over a period of 18 months. The lectures are conveniently structured into course blocks of three weeks each. Three of the five course blocks take place in Switzerland, the other two at the Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

What business areas do your participants generally enter after graduation?

Graduates of the International Wealth Management Executive MBA program typically continue their career in the private banking area. Our experience shows that most graduates are able to improve their position considerably within their company or elsewhere after having concluded the program.

What are the characteristics you are looking for in a candidate?

The International Wealth Management Executive MBA is aimed at experienced advisors and managers in the wealth management industry with a high level of potential for further development, whether as a high-caliber senior advisor or as senior line manager. The program is also ideally suited for stewards of family wealth, be it the owners themselves or senior executives from family offices.
The basic admission requirements are a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent, a minimum of five years' professional experience, preferably in the wealth management sector and fluency in English, since the whole program is exclusively taught in English.
