The Global European MBA

ENPC European School of Management

An interview with Prof. Tawfik Jelassi, Ph.D.

Dean, President of the Board of Directors and Director of Academic Affairs of the ENPC School of International Management, Paris

What is the profile of your participants?

In our full-time MBA program, the average age of the participants is 30 years and on average they have 6 years of work experience, a GMAT score of 600 and a TOEFL of 270 points.  We put a strong emphasis on international exposure in terms of study or work abroad.  However, in our Executive MBA program, the average age of the participants is 36 years and on average they have 12 years of work experience.  However, at our school, we are not looking for standard candidates.  We want students who will contribute with their individuality throughout the completion of the MBA program.  The first consideration that we look at when examining MBA applications is the person as a whole.

What sets your program apart from other MBA programs?

Our school offers a customized MBA program.  We have few compulsory courses and a large number of electives.  In order to help our participants to choose their study program depending on their educational background, professional experience and career plan, each of them is assigned a Faculty advisor who also monitors the academic progression of the participant throughout the program.  By doing so, we offer our MBA participants a high degree of flexibility and customization.

Our MBA is also supported by the ENPC, one of the leading engineering schools in Europe and the oldest civil engineering school in the world since the ENPC was created in 1747.  In the areas of economics, management and finance, we collaborate with some of the ENPC academic departments and research laboratories.

Finally, our MBA program run out of a central location in Paris and is linked to Paris Tech, the consortium of the top Paris-based engineering schools (including Ecole Polytechnique, Ecole de Mines, Ecole des Ponts et Chaussées, Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Télécom de Paris, Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Techniques Avancées, Institut National Agronomique, etc.).

Could you describe the structure of your program?

For our Executive MBA program, we currently have one starting date per year: it is late January.  The program modules are taught over one weekend per month, from Friday 9:00 am through Sunday 5:00 pm.  The program runs over two calendar years, with no session held in August.  It includes two overseas study trips: one in year 1 to the USA and one in year 2 to China, each of about one week duration.

What business areas do your students generally enter after graduation?

Our MBA graduates join both private sector companies as well as the public sector and supra-national organizations (such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the European Commission, the OECD, the African Development Bank, etc.).  Business sectors that our alumni have joined include Consulting, Banking and Finance, Pharmaceutical, Energy, Information Technology, Telecommunications, Transportation/Logistics, Manufacturing, etc.  Also several of our graduates set up every year their own venture and thus follow an entrepreneurial route.

Who are your professors?

The faculty involved in the ENPC MBA programs includes permanent Professors as well as Visiting Faculty coming from leading universities and business schools from all over the world.  They represent different academic and professional backgrounds and world-class research achievements.  As the faculty members themselves are internationally diverse in terms of their cultural, geographic and business perspectives, our MBA participants get exposed to an enriching variety of schools of thought and teaching approaches.

Since 1987, the ENPC School of International Management has been delivering a dynamic range of undergraduate, MBA, and executive education programs that share a common philosophy of value-based global leadership.  This drive is based on our conviction that leadership and management must be anchored in a value system that emphasizes human capital and society at large.  Our school brings together individuals with differing cultural, educational and professional backgrounds who share one goal: the pursuit of excellence.
