Preparing Students from Around the World
to Serve in the World
An interview with Wil C. Goodheer
President of The International University Vienna
About the International University Vienna
The International University (IU), based on the American educational system, was established in 1981 to provide academic and professional training for students from around the world. IU has served students from more than 100 nations on 6 continents!
What is International University's mission?
The mission of The International University is “preparing students from around the world to serve in the world.” Implicit in this mission statement is the goal of teaching students to be world citizens and to interact effectively with people from around the world.
What type of graduate business program do you offer?
IU offers a Master of International Business (MIB) — 13 courses and an internship — and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) --16 courses, internship and thesis
Do you have an internship program?
An internship program is a requirement to receive the MIB or MBA degree. (A student already employed may use his job in a business field as his internship, with approval).
How international is International University, and what is your university doing to reinforce this position?
The International University is completely international — and not only in name! The faculty, textbooks, curricula, student body, and goals are all global in focus. Maintaining this international approach is part of the mission of IU, and the institution evaluates itself accordingly.
What advice would you give to a person who is thinking about getting an MBA?
I would advise the MBA prospect to make sure he or she chooses a program which is international in scope, and one which is a combination of theory and practice. Theory alone produces businessmen incapable of adjusting quickly enough to the changing demands of business. Practice alone leads to a gap in the ability to strategize, draw conclusions and incorporate new findings, which can make the difference between success and failure. Today's MBA recipient must also understand the relationship between business and politics, and understand the global implications of many business decisions. MBA recipients must also have an understanding of business ethics, especially related to cross-cultural competency. Furthermore, MBA recipients must have adequate knowledge of technology, accounting and finance, marketing, and management skills.
