Programme ethos


The Lancaster MBA programme focusses not only on theoretical learning and although you will cover a whole range of business topics taught by academic experts within LUMS, you also have a wealth of teaching integrated around what it means to be a successful manager, and leader. These include integrated “core capabilities” sessions throughout the year in areas including conflict resolution, negotiation, leadership, communication and critical thinking. These skills are integral to being a high quality manager and leader and so we ensure that our graduates not only have the knowledge to succeed, but also the skills and mind-set to pursue the next steps in their career.


Our programme covers a wealth of different business areas including Marketing, Digital Innovation, Strategy, Finance, Economics, Operations Management, Responsible Leadership and Ethics. Taught by expects from across the faculty, all learning is designed to both utilise your existing experience and to help to broaden and expand your management knowledge.


In addition to this, our programme also features four capstone action challenges, which are designed to pull all theoretical learning into a practical and applicable context. These challenges are below, and three are in real companies, and one is in a dynamic simulated environment:


Business Management Challenge


This challenge features a simulated environment in which students experience what it is like to run their own business, and have to make decisions throughout a 4 day intensive simulated experience. For example, it may be that the business faces significant challenges that are unexpected, and students need to use all of their knowledge, skills and experience to navigate these issues with the support of their professions and classmates.


 Entrepreneurial Challenge


This challenge utilises the group of “Entrepreneurs in residence” that we have at Lancaster University Management School. These individuals have a wealth of experience in running their own business, maybe start-ups, family businesses or tech companies. This challenge requires you to work on real challenges that their business faces, and they trust you to support their business in certain areas. It may be that they give you an area of their company they would like to improve, or a new opportunity they may be able to undertake. With the support of your professors, and these real life entrepreneurs, you need to create recommendations for that business which then maybe implemented. Just to say, these entrepreneurs are also available throughout the programme to coach and mentor students who may be interested in this type of work in future.


Consultancy Challenge


This challenge places you with a real small or medium sized company, typically in the north of England (for example in Lancaster or Manchester) and you work on a consultancy basis to tackle a problem or an issues that company is facing. Gaining real experience of working on a consultancy basis, this project gives you exposure to real senior managers and their networks and allows you to gain practical experience and also contacts in the UK.


Corporate Challenge


The final action base challenge of the programme is the Corporate Challenge. This 6-8 week project sees our students move down to London (with their living costs subsidised by the programme) and sees them working with large national and international companies again as a consultant. With regular contact to senior executives who guide your project, our previous cohorts have tackled issues for companies including Microsoft, HSBC, Barclays and National Rail. At the conclusion of this challenge you present your recommendations and report to senior company executives who again may choose to implement your recommendations. This challenge provides vital corporate experience, exposure in the city of London and also helps you to build connections and networks in major companies in a real setting.


If students wish, rather than taking a corporate challenge they can also choose instead to do an internship or an academic dissertation.


These action challenges, coupled with our dedicated and experienced MBA careers team provide students with all of the skills, knowledge and opportunities to take the next step within their career. On average our MBA graduates see an 88% increase in salary within a number of years of graduating. Our MBA careers team provide one-to-one and group support on developing a clear strategy for taking the next steps in your career whilst also providing practical contacts and advice to make this a reality. We also provide access to independent careers coaches who are able to support in a range of different areas.


Our programme very much features both Lancaster, London and Beyond and is taught collaboratively with industry expects and features frequent integrated visits and trips across the UK, including to London. The programme is designed to propel your management career and support you into the next steps of your career, whether that be to progress within your current field and industry, start your own business, change career or to lead.

Lancaster MBA Requirements

A good first degree, e.g. 2:1 or equivalent
A minimum of 3 years' postgraduate work experience, in a managerial capacity
Two satisfactory references (one academic, one professional)

If your degree is from a non-UK university we also require you to have the following:

A minimum IELTS score of 7.0 – min of 6.0 in each element, TOEFL of 100, or PTE score of at least 70. (GMAT is not required but if you have a GMAT we would ask for a minimum score of 600)
